The soap took on a harrowing hate crime storyline which saw Nina and her boyfriend Seb Franklin attacked on their way home for being members of the goth subculture.

The plot followed the real life story of the goth Sophie Lancaster, 20, who was involved in an attack in a park in Bacup, Lancashire, in 2007. Sophie died from her injuries.

The soap worked with The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, set up by Sophie’s mum Sylvia.

Mollie beat the other nominees in the category – Billy Price, who plays Sid Summer in Hollyoaks, and Danny Dyer for the role of Mick Carter in EastEnders.

Taking to the stage to pick up her award, a visibly emotional Mollie said: ‘Massive thank you to my mum, my dad, my auntie and uncle and my boyfriend. You’ve been so supportive.

‘And I just want to dedicate this award to anyone who feels like they don’t fit the mould or they feel like they don’t belong. You’re amazing as you are.’
