Kadarius Toney produced an early contender for the worst performance of the season on Thursday night – and Giants fans couldn’t help but laugh at his expense.
With Travis Kelce out injured vs. the Lions in Week 1, Patrick Mahomes needed his other receivers to step up in the All-Pro’s absence.
That didn’t happen, and the main culprit was Toney, who dropped three passes in the game as the defending champs suffered a 21-20 home loss to Detroit.
If three drops weren’t bad enough – Jacksonville’s Zay Jones led the league with 13 all of last season, for context – Toney actually directly contributed to the Lions scoring points.
His first drop of the night bounced off his hands and into the arms of Detroit safety Brian Branch, who took the ball the other way for a 50-yard touchdown.
Toney later dropped a pass on third down in the third quarter – forcing the team to settle for a field goal – and failed to haul in an attempt with just 2:25 remaining in the game with Kansas City looking to take a late lead.

The former first-round pick for the Giants finished his nightmare night with one receiving yard and negative-one rushing yard, and New York fans did not hide their amusement online.
The oft-injured receiver played just 12 games over two years for the Giants before the franchise traded him to the Chiefs last season, and Toney (literally) gave Big Blue the middle finger after winning the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in February.
So it wasn’t surprising to see Giants fans revel in Toney’s rough night.
‘Do Chiefs fans still want to defend Kadarius Toney?,’ Giants Daily asked on Twitter.
‘Droppenheimer,’ one fan hilariously branded the wideout.

Another fan pointed out that the trade package the Giants received for Toney – a third-round and sixth-round pick – helped the team land tight end Darren Waller this summer.
Even some of the team’s beat reporters took some swipes at the player, who the Giants selected with the 20th overall pick in 2021.
‘Can’t trust Kadarius Toney, in every way imaginable,’ said ESPN’s Jordan Raanaan. That’s why the Giants traded him.’
And The Record’s Art Stapleton said, ‘All those who questioned how Giants could let Kadarius Toney out of the building last year refused to see the big picture.’
‘He’s a gadget player, not a WR1.’
Even some Giants beat reporters offered some harsh analysis of Toney afterwards
Mahomes defended Toney after the game.
‘I have trust in KT. He missed a lot of training camp. Obviously, he wanted to play and fought in rehab hard so he could play,’ the quarterback said.
‘Stuff is not always going to go your way, obviously, he would have wanted to catch a few of those in the game, but I have trust that he is going to be the guy that I go to in those crucial moments and he’s going to make the catch and win us some games like he did last year and get him more and more reps. I’m sure that those drops will disappear.’
It remains to be seen whether coach Andy Reid has as much trust in Toney as Mahomes does, but the quarterback will be hoping his favorite target Kelce can return in Week 2.
