  • Man City’s Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker were racially abused on Instagram
  • The pair were sent monkey emojis after their Champions League final defeat
  • It comes after a social media boycott performed by Premier League teams
  • Marcus Rashford was targeted by racist trolls after United’s Europa League loss

Manchester City duo Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker were subjected to racist abuse after their Champions League final defeat to Chelsea.

The pair were both sent monkey emojis on social media platform Instagram after the game, according to Sky Sports, just days after Manchester United star Marcus Rashford had received ‘at least 70’ racist messages following their Europa League final loss to Villarreal.

Sterling, who has been a vocal campaigner against racism in football, has been targeted by trolls on a number of occasions this season – and earlier this month was sent vile messages just 48 hours after the Premier League and its clubs had carried out a 48 hour boycott of social media platforms.

Sportsmail has reached out to Facebook – which owns Instagram – for comment.

The tech firm had removed comments sent to Sterling in May after City’s Champions League semi-final victory over PSG, and said the abuse was ‘unacceptable’ and vowed to toughen up on culprits.

‘The racist abuse sent to Raheem Sterling is unacceptable and we do not want it on Instagram.

‘We have removed the comment and taken action against the account that posted it.

‘As part of our ongoing work in this space, we’ll soon be rolling out new tools to help prevent people seeing abusive messages from strangers.

‘No single thing will fix this challenge overnight but we’re committed to doing what we can to keep our community safe from abuse.’

Walker – who played the full 90 minutes in Porto – himself revealed sickening messages had been sent to him after winning the Carabao Cup with Manchester City against Tottenham in April.

He posted a screenshot and asked Instagram: ‘When is this going to stop?!’

Marcus Rashford claimed he had received ‘at least 70’ racist messages after Man United’s Europa League final loss to Villarreal this week

This week Rashford claimed he was subjected to ‘at least 70’ racist messages after his United side fell to a penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal, revealing that one of his abusers was a maths teacher who had sent ‘a mountain of monkey emojis’.

‘At least 70 racial slurs on my social accounts counted so far. For those working to make me feel any worse than I already do, good luck trying.’

‘I’m more outraged that one of the abusers that left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a maths teacher with an open profile. He teaches children!! And knows that he can freely racially abuse without consequence.’
