Burnley to wear one-off Alzheimer’s Society strip on Tuesday for Carabao Cup clash with Rochdale after six 1960 title winners died following a battle with dementia

  • Team sponsor Spreadex Sports has agreed to the wearing of the new kit
  • The Alzheimer’s Society strip is being worn to mark World Alzheimer’s Day
  • Burnley expect to raise a five-figure sum for the charity from selling the kits 


Burnley will wear a one-off strip emblazoned with the Alzheimer’s Society tomorrow as they aim to raise thousands for the dementia charity.

Sean Dyche’s side face Rochdale in the Carabao Cup third round at Turf Moor and have struck a deal with kit sponsors Spreadex Sports to change their home shirts on World Alzheimer’s Day.

Both Burnley and their principal sponsor are committed to handing the charity a £5 donation each from every third kit sold and expect the total to reach a substantial five-figure sum.

Six of the club’s 1960 First Division title-winning team have died after being diagnosed with dementia. 

They include Jimmy McIlroy, the cornerstone of Harry Potts’ champions and who has a stand named after him. McIlroy died in 2018.

Another member of that historic squad, Jimmy Robson, is also living with what he told Sportsmail last year was ‘a football disease’. 

His daughter, Dany, revealed that the Alzheimer’s Society regularly check in on her father.

Burnley’s head of commercial partnerships Ella Cummins said: ‘For many of us, this is a cause close to our hearts. 

As a club we are looking forward to working closely with Alzheimer’s Society over the coming year on some great initiatives.’

Alex Hyde-Smith, the Alzheimer’s Society director of fundraising, added: ‘We can’t thank Burnley FC enough for giving us this platform.’

Burnley FC’s principal partner Spreadex.com is donating its front-of-shirt branding to the Alzheimer’s Society, in support of the club’s work with the charity, for the Clarets’ Carabao Cup fixture against Rochdale tomorrow, which is World Alzheimer’s Day.
