San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy admitted to doing impersonations in the middle of games this week to show his teammates he is calm under pressure.
Purdy’s admission comes after he did an impression of SpongeBob SquarePants’ laugh during Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night.
Purdy has done from Mr. Irrelevant, as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, to playing in the Super Bowl in his sophomore professional season.
During that rise from third-string quarterback to legitimate NFL starter, the 24-year-old dipping into his Nickelodeon knowledge could have helped the 49ers be one of the league’s best teams.
‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ debuted on Nickelodeon five months before Purdy was born in 1999.
Purdy will play in the Super Bowl less than two years after being deemed Mr. Irrelevant
To let his teammates know he is calm during games, Purdy admitted to doing impersonations
‘Growing up, my dad was pretty good with impersonations,’ Purdy said Wednesday. ‘And so I think I picked up from him. Just whether it was family, friends, teammates growing up, I feel like I’ve always done some impersonations.’
‘I don’t know, I’ll do it sometimes when we’re in the huddle or something to sort of just show them that, “Alright bro. He’s calm, he’s cool and collected here. He’s joking around. So it’s all good,”‘ Purdy continued.
‘So I feel like there’s times and moments where I do it, but I don’t go around trying to impersonate everybody all the time,’ Purdy added.
Purdy could break into an impression of the beloved animated children’s character in the middle of Allegiant Stadium during Super Bowl LVIII against the Chiefs.
If San Francisco wins the Super Bowl, Purdy would become the fourth Mr. Irrelevant to do so. He would be the first quarterback picked with the last NFL Draft selection to win a championship.
