But the thief then took out a sharp object from his pocket and repeatedly tried to stab him before making contact with the side of his torso.

The Briton did not realise until he saw the blade in front of his face, at which point he let go of the thug who hurriedly scampered away to safety with his assailants.

One brave passerby tried to halt their escape without success. All four were arrested shortly after. The British man was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The stabbing was captured on video, shot by another British witness.

The footage opens looking down a narrow Barcelona street, where the scuffle can be seen unfolding outside of a shop window. Someone can be heard speaking in English, saying ‘give it back bruv’ and ‘you’re on camera mate’.

The British tourist can be heard saying ‘where’s my s**t’ as he tries to wrestle a bag out of the the thief’s grasp. ‘Where’s my necklaces bro?’ the Brit says, as the thief appears to be surrounded by a group.

Suddenly, the thief holds up a knife and brandishes it in front of the British tourist’s face – and shouts at him while threatening him – while trying to get run away.

The tourist does not appear to realise what the thief is holding at first, and continues to chase him. He pushes the thief back into a wall, while still holding on to him by his clothing and asking him where his jewellery is.

At this point, the thief makes a couple of attempts to stab the tourist. He again holds the knife in front of the Brit’s face, at which point he flinches backwards.

But the thief to too quick, and with his left hand, he stabs the British tourist in the side of his torso as he tries to back way.

Now free from the grapple, the thief is shown sprinting off down the street with his accomplices as people shout after them.

On the same night as the bag theft, another stabbing took place in the same neighbourhood at around 10pm.

And at 4am, two more people were arrested after knifing a third person in a heated argument.

The Catalonian capital sees roughly 225 robberies every day, with gangs targeting the flocks of tourists who visit the beautiful city on Spain’s northeastern coast.

This week, then-Barcelona footballer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was targeted by an armed gang who broke into his luxury home, threatened him and his family with guns and iron bars, and escaped with jewels after damaging his jaw.

The forward, who was transferred to Chelsea yesterday, was assaulted by the men in front of his wife Alysha Behague, with the criminals escaping in a white Audi A3.

El Pais report that at least four men climbed into his garden at the complex in Castelldefels and threatened him until they gained access to the player’s safe.

The couple were made to lie on the floor for an hour in front of their two terrified children Curtys, 11, and Pierre, six, claims a further report by RAC1.

Aubameyang was struck on the chin by an iron bar, while Behague suffered a blow to the head.

In 2019, it was reported Barcelona had become so ravaged by pickpockets, police were handing out survival kits.

The Urban Guard of Barcelona started handing out the bags to tourists who returned to their belongings after a swim only to find they’d been taken.

The bags contain flip flips, a t-shirt, trousers and a one-way Barcelona Metro ticket.

The city centre of Barcelona has a reputation for its high crime rate, which is caused predominantly by thefts and robberies on its streets.

According to the Barcelona Field Study Centre, the capital of Catalonia saw 40 crimes per 100 inhabitants in 2016, with the number being inflated by tourists.

Earlier this summer, a mugger stripped a luxury watch off an American tourist’s wrist in front of his family in Barcelona.

Police valued the timepiece at $45,000 (£37,000) – days after the man reportedly told them it was worth $800,000 (£685,000).

The tourist was walking through the city’s central Gothic Quarter in June, the same area as yesterday’s stabbing, with his young family when a mugger snuck up behind him and clawed the watch from his arm.

The American told police the timepiece was snatched off his wrist near the five-star Mercer Hotel where he is believed to have been staying.

The tourist first filed a complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) valuing his watch at $800,000 (£685,000). But after carrying out their own checks police lowered the valuation to $45,000 (£36,870), Catalan newspaper El Periódico reported.

It’s not clear why police lowered the value of the watch.

CCTV footage of the lightning-quick robbery shows the unsuspecting American walking through an alley as a man runs up behind him and seizes his arm.

As the thief swings his victim around with one hand, he rips away the watch with the other and runs away leaving the family dumbfounded.

The footage shows the tourist with his partner and three young children at the time of the mugging. As the man is grabbed he stumbles backwards about to fall, but is able to steady himself – only to watch the man run off with his watch.

The previous month, F1 star Sebastian Vettel chased thieves through the streets of Barcelona on a scooter in search of his stolen bag.

The four-time world champion was trying to track down possessions taken through his car window, following the Spanish Grand Prix.

According to reports in the Catalan newspaper, El Periodico, the German driver used the GPS signal from his AirPods headphones that were inside the bag using the Find My iPhone app.

Having traced the signal, Vettel jumped on a scooter through the city until he successfully reached the correct point on the map.

But, although he found his headphones where his iPhone had indicated they were, the bag and the rest of its contents were nowhere to be found.
