A gunman entered a Vodafone store on Melbourne’s Bourke Street on Friday morning just hours before Covid restrictions ease further in the city.

The man was arrested inside a nearby building lobby just after 11am and no one was injured.

‘Police located a man with a firearm inside the foyer of a commercial property on Bourke Street and he was taken into custody without further incident,’ a Victoria Police spokesman said.

‘Police are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.’

The man’s motives have also not yet been established.

A witness said police found the man in a nearby building foyer after first searching for him in a 7-Eleven a few doors down.

‘I entered the building and saw the man in the corner – he had a gun, and it looked like he was trying to put it down his pants and hide it,’ the witness told The Herald Sun.

‘I called out to them to come over and they charged in.’

The arrest came just seven hours before Melbourne’s next round of restriction easing takes place – which is planned to coincide with Victoria hitting the 80 per cent double-dose vaccination mark.

Indoor entertainment venues, gyms and retail can reopen for fully vaccinated patrons, and capacity limits will increase for restaurants, pubs and cafes.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
