Boris Johnson rebuked by Lord Coe for using tired mantra after confirming backing for 2030 World Cup

Boris Johnson blasted by Lord Coe for using the ‘red-blooded’ and ‘very tired mantra’ of ‘bring football home’ to confirm Government’s £2.8m backing for UK and Ireland’s 2030 World Cup joint-bid – as he calls for ‘humility’ from the Prime Minister

Lord Coe has slapped down Boris Johnson for using a ‘red-blooded’ and ‘tired’ mantra when confirming the UK and Ireland’s joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.

Prime Minister Johnson said it was time to ‘bring football home’, with the Government set to plough £2.8million into a campaign to stage the tournament for the first time since 1966.

But Coe, who led London’s successful bid to host 2012 Olympics and was also a member of the doomed 2018 World Cup bid team, told Sky News: ‘The watchword for this campaign has to be “humility”.

‘If it’s gone wrong in the past, it’s because we have focused on the red-blooded notion of “bringing football home” and “we gave the game to the world”.

‘That is a very tired mantra. We have to avoid it. This has to be a global bid and the bid team needs to be diverse and inclusive. But we all want to get behind it. This is something that is really worth going for.’

The formal bid process does not start until next year but the football associations of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland said on Tuesday they were ‘delighted that the Government has committed to support a prospective five-association bid’.

The FA also thanked the Government after it was confirmed they will receive £25m investment into grassroots football.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: ‘This is fantastic news for football. This £25m investment is the first part of their £550m commitment, which will transform grassroots football facilities in communities across the country.’
