Beyonce Renaissance: New album hints at Jay Z cheating scandal and THAT elevator fight

Beyonce hinted at husband Jay Z’s cheating scandal and his infamous lift fight with her sister Solange in candid songs on her new album Renaissance.

The singer, 40, released her long-awaited seventh studio album titled Renaissance at midnight on Thursday much to the joy of her fans after it was leaked two days prior.

In a series of songs, the mother-of-three referenced her 21-year relationship with rapper Jay Z as she mused that ‘nobody’s perfect’ and insisted that they ‘don’t need the world’s acceptance.’

Beyonce first spoke publicly about her husband’s infidelity in her 2016 visual album Lemonade, referencing the other woman as ‘Becky with the good hair.’

‘Nobody’s perfect’: Beyonce hints at Jay Z’s cheating scandal and insists she’s now ‘the only one’ – as she warns ‘not to f**k’ with her sister Solange after THAT elevator fight in her new album Renaissance

The following year Jay Z referenced the scandal himself, claiming he had ‘gone into survival mode’ so had to ‘shut down emotionally,’ which resulted in him being unfaithful.

Appearing to reference the ongoing scrutiny surrounding her relationship, Beyo nce sings in Renaissance track Plastic On The Sofa: ‘We don’t need the world’s acceptance. They’re too hard on me, they’re too hard on you, boy.’

She also sings: ‘Boy, I know you can’t help but to be yourself around me, yourself around me. And I know nobody’s perfect so I’ll let you be, I’ll let you be.

‘It’s the way that you wear your emotions on both of your sleeves, ’til the face you make when I tell you that I had to leave.’

The singer also seems confident that Jay Z won’t be repeating his antics, belting out: ‘I’m one of one, I’m number one, I’m the only one.

‘Don’t even waste your time trying to compete with me. No one else in this world can think like me. I’m twisted, contradicted, keep him addicted.’

Beyonce also references her husband’s scandal with her sister Solange.

In 2014, Solange was filmed attacking Jay Z in an elevator at the Met Gala, with her Beyonce and her husband releasing a joint statement at the time stressing it was a ‘private family matter’.

However, later in the year she referenced in a remix of her single, Flawless: ‘And we could go around and get some good karma, but no. We escalate, up in this b***h like elevators. Of course sometimes s**t go down, when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator’.

She has now appeared to reference the scandal again in new single Cozy, singing: ‘She’s a god, she’s a hero, she survived, all she been through, confident and she lethal.

‘Might I suggest you don’t f**k with my sis, because she comfortable. Comfortable in my skin, cozy with who I am.’

Renaissance: What the critics have said

The Times’ Will Hodgkinson

‘Most of all, the impression Renaissance gives is that Beyoncé, whose singing is as dynamic as it has ever been, has replaced overthinking with disco grooving. It doesn’t seem like a bad way of dealing with the age of anxiety.’

Rating:

The Telegraph’s James Hall

‘This is a vast superclub of an album. But for all its inventiveness, its flavours exist within fairly narrow parameters. Still, these songs will be blasted out of cars, at house parties, in hotel rooms and on dance floors for years to come.’

Rating:

Page Six’s Nicholas Hautman

‘One could argue that Renaissance does not feel like a career milestone in the way that Beyoncé  and Lemonade did — after all, their surprise releases and visual components only heightened the magic — but it is a welcome and even refreshing progression for a superstar who consistently rewrites the rulebooks.’

The Guardian’s Tara Joshi

Rating:

‘It’s a celebration of living abundantly and outside the realms of others’ expectations, and acts as a reminder of how rare it is to witness this hyper-disciplined artist simply having fun on her own terms. Her sense of freedom throughout is palpable, and an infectious spur to action.’

The i’s Kate Solomon

Rating:

‘It’s not perfect: we might wonder at the hefty 62-minute length and at the scrappiness of the sequencing that departs from her more polished, concept-driven albums. But these do not detract from this dazzling tribute to underground and underappreciated black cultures, this endless party with its effusive reminder that you are allowed to enjoy yourself.’

Best Fit’s David Cobbald

Renaissance is one of Beyoncé’s best albums to date: it doesn’t walk in the footsteps of its predecessors but instead makes its own path, going to places we didn’t think Beyoncé would go.. The six years since her last effort have well and truly been worth the wait.

Renaissance has achieved widespread critical acclaim, with critics hailing the album ‘a glorious celebration of the dancefloor.’

The Times awards the album four stars, noting all the songs ‘add up to a bold, frequently seductive piece of work, varied, complex and joyful, which jumps from the pop funk of Cuff It (featuring a contribution from Chic’s Nile Rodgers, unsurprisingly) to the soul of Plastic Off the Sofa, while taking in some pretty weird, futuristic detours along the way.

‘Most of all, the impression Renaissance gives is that Beyoncé, whose singing is as dynamic as it has ever been, has replaced overthinking with disco grooving. It doesn’t seem like a bad way of dealing with the age of anxiety.’

Meanwhile, The Telegraph notes: ‘These songs will be blasted out of cars, at house parties, in hotel rooms and on dance floors for years to come.’
