Ben Affleck glowingly shared the way his wife Jennifer Lopez helped him understand fashion for his new movie Air.
The 50-year-old beefcake both directed and stars in the film, which blows open the story behind Michael Jordan’s partnership with Nike.
In a new interview, he was asked how J-Lo influenced the screenplay, and he gushed in reply: ‘Oh my God, she’s brilliant.’
He added: ‘She is incredibly knowledgeable about the way fashion evolves through the culture as a confluence of music, sports, entertainment and dance.’
J-Lo ‘helped me in talking about the way in which a part of the reason why Jordans were so meaningful is because culture and style in America is 90 percent driven by Black culture,’ Ben told the Hollywood Reporter.

‘Black culture has historically pioneered music, dance, fashion, and it’s then been stolen, appropriated, remarketed as Elvis or whatever. And in this case, [Nike], a white-run corporate entity, was starting to do business with African American athletes in an identity affiliation sales thing,’ the actor and activist declared.
‘They were really taking value from what Michael Jordan represents and who he is. I don’t think the meaning can be overstated. They’re going to switch from: “Hey, guys, we are a nice shoe,” to: “If Mike has it, you want it.”‘
Ben leads the cast of the picture as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, alongside his old pal and collaborator Matt Damon as Sonny Vaccaro, the shoe salesman who made it his mission to recruit the then-rookie Michael Jordan.
Written by Alex Convery, the script for Air wound up on the 2021 Black List, an annual ranking of unproduced screenplays that industry executives particularly like.
Amazon Studios snapped up the project the following year, resulting in a finished movie that will be released on April 5 with a star-studded cast including Viola Davis, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina and Marlon Wayans.
His warm words come after he finally revealed what wife Jennifer Lopez said to him during a viral tense exchange at the 2023 Grammys in February.
The Oscar winner, 50, whose forlorn expression saw him become a meme on the night, also told The Hollywood Reporter that he’d ‘had a good time’ — despite a video of J-Lo, 53, snapping at him spreading across social media.
The Gone Girl actor — who recently celebrated a new milestone with the On The Floor hitmaker by purchasing a new $64 million Pacific Palisades mansion — was asked by the interviewer if he was bothered by the meme that was filtering through the internet.

What really was said: I leaned into her and I was like, ‘As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor,’ prompting his wife to say, ‘You better f***ing not leave’; the couple seen at the 2023 Grammys in February
‘No. I had a good time at the Grammys,’ he admitted. ‘My wife was going, and I thought: “Well, there’ll be good music. It might be fun.”‘
At one point during the awards show, Ben recalled, ‘I saw [Grammy host Trevor Noah approach] and I was like, ‘Oh, God.’
‘They were framing us in this shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling. I leaned into her and I was like: “As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor.”‘
Affleck then revealed his wife’s response, which was: ‘”You better f***ing not leave.” That’s a husband-and-wife thing,’ he jokingly added.
‘I mean, some of it is, I’m like: “All right, who is this act?” Like, I don’t keep up. My wife does, obviously. And yeah, it is your wife’s work event. And I’ve gone to events and been pissed off. I’ve gone and been bored,’ Ben explained.
‘I’ve gone to award shows and been drunk, a bunch. Nobody ever once said I’m drunk. [But at the Grammys] they were like: “He’s drunk.” And I thought, that’s interesting.’
He explained: ‘That raises a whole other thing about whether or not it’s wise to acknowledge addiction because there’s a lot of compassion, but there is still a tremendous stigma, which is often quite inhibiting.’
Ben notably suffered with an addiction battle with alcohol in the past, and has remained sober since 2020. When talking to outlet, he discussed having his battle happen in the public eye.
‘I became, out of no desire of my own, one of the poster boys for actor alcoholism and recovery and the whole thing.’
However, he addressed the positive side to the situation. ‘And the best part about that is that sometimes people call me up and they’re like, ‘Hey, can you help me out?’ And it makes me feel so good to do that.’
The day after the Grammys, Jennifer jumped to Instagram to share clips and snaps taken from the festivities.
She captioned: ‘Always the best time with my love, my husband,’ followed by a white heart emoji, hinting that all was well the night before.

‘I don’t know if there’s anybody who understands Instagram better than her,’ the star explained, adding that she had given him ‘advice’ before the interview.
‘She thinks that because of experiences that I’ve had, I’ve become very guarded. And she’s right. I view these things as land mines, where if you say one wrong thing, your career might be over,’ Ben stated.
‘I had a really painful experience where I did an interview where I was really vulnerable, and the entire pickup was something that was not only not right, it was actually the opposite of what I meant,’ he recalled to the publication.

Ben expressed that the point that he had aimed to make at the time was, ‘Anyone who’s been through divorce makes that calculus of, ‘How much do we try?’ We loved each other. We care about each other. We have respect for each other.’
‘I was trying to say, ‘Hey, look, I was drinking too much, and the less happy you become, whether it’s your job, your marriage, it’s just that as your life becomes more difficult, if you’re doing things to fill a hole that aren’t healthy, you’re going to start doing more of those things.’ I think I was pretty articulate about that.’
Jennifer Garner and Ben were married from 2005 until their divorce was finalized in 2018. They share three children, Violet, 17, Seraphina, 14, and Samuel, 11, which Lopez is now the stepmother of.
