Sergio Aguero has told close he friends he will bring his glittering career to an end after suffering heart problems, according to reports.

The Barcelona striker was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia last month after being forced off with chest pains in their 1-1 draw against Alaves at the end of last month.

But The Telegraph, as well as reports in Spain, claim Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer is now set to hang up his boots, bringing a stunning career which has included five Premier League titles to a close.

Spanish journalist Gerard Romero also claims a press conference has been scheduled to announce his retirement next week, though Barcelona have yet to make a formal announcement.

There have been conflicting statements since the shock reports in Spain first broke however.

Ex-City star Samir Nasri told Canal Plus in France that his former team-mate ‘sent me a message and unfortunately he has confirmed [that he is retiring].’

The ex-France international added: ‘A lot of sadness, he’s a great guy and a great person. I am sad because it is not a choice, it is unfortunately forced.

‘I know the love he has for the sport, and to end like this will hurt a lot. He is someone I appreciate a lot.’

But new Barcelona boss Xavi – whose tenure got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory against Espanyol in the Catalan derby – insisted ‘what has come out is not true’.

The Barcelona coach said: ‘I don’t know [the latest]. I spoke to him the other day and what has come out is not true. The club does not have this information. I don’t know where it’s come from. This is a medical issue.’

Aguero has spent the last 18 years playing professionally for the likes of Independiente, Atletico Madrid, City and Barcelona.

His most successful period undoubtedly came at the Etihad Stadium, where he scored 260 goals in 390 games, the most famous of which was the 94th-minute winner against QPR in 2012 to seal City’s first ever Premier League crown.

He also won an FA Cup and six League Cups before leaving on a free transfer for the Camp Nou outfit this summer, where he agreed a two-year deal shortly before the official departure of close friend Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain.

A calf injury meant Aguero’s Barcelona debut was delayed until October 17, when he came on for the final three minutes of their 3-1 victory against Valencia under ex-boss Ronald Koeman.

His only Barcelona goal in his four appearances for the club came in the 2-1 Clasico reverse against Real Madrid, and suffered heart problems on his full home debut six days later.

Aguero insisted he was in ‘good spirits to face the recovery’, tweeting: ‘I am fine and in good spirits to face the recovery process. I want to thank everyone for so many messages of support and affection that make my heart stronger today.’

Aguero has also earned 101 caps for Argentina – scoring 41 times in the process – and was part of the side that ended the country’s 28-year wait for a trophy with Copa America glory in July.
