The theft was reported ‘a few weeks ago’ when a gold trader found his product was no longer inside the vault when he went to trade the precious metal.

Police said the person who alerted them to the robbery ‘had ordered a gold trading company to trade its gold, and was told by that company that there was a problem. His gold was no longer present in the vault’.

It is believed the gold was stolen from the Safe Deposit company but police have yet to confirm this is the case, EN24 reported.

A 61-year-old suspect from Oud-Beijerland has since been arrested in connection with the disappearance, Police Rotterdam said on Twitter.

‘The investigation into the large gold robbery started a few weeks ago after the police was informed of the theft of a huge amount of gold bars worth millions of euros’, police said.

Officers were today conducting searches at several locations across the Netherlands. It was expected to take ‘hours’.

Witnesses claimed police had been emptying secure lock boxes from the vault in the raid, some of which still contained gold, the NL Times reported.

In a statement, police said: ‘An office building in Rotterdam was also searched today, including the monitoring unit. The monitoring unit is used to secure the building.

‘The agents of this unit are more heavily armed and have bullet-proof vests. In this way it is prevented that people arrive at the crime scene and everyone there can work undisturbed.’
