Are these Australia’s ‘nepo babies? Aussie stars with famous parents

The Hollywood nepotism debate recently reared its head again after a feature called ‘The Year of the Nepo Baby’ was published in New York magazine.

Many US-based actors and singers were called out for using their famous parents, and relatives to build their careers – with Jaden Smith, Zoe Kravitz and Maya Hawke among those named.

While the phenomenon is nothing new, the term ‘nepo baby’ has become an increasingly popular term to describe it.

The Hollywood nepotism debate has reared its head again after a feature called ‘The Year of the Nepo Baby’ was recently published in New York magazine

Some have owned their status as genetically privileged, with Bono’s actress daughter Eve Hewson joking she’s going to get ‘nepo baby’ tattooed on her ‘a***’.

But others like Lottie Moss – the sister of model Kate – and Lily Allen, have spoken out against the article.

Meanwhile across the pond the Australian entertainment industry is full of young and upcoming stars with famous parents.

What is a nepo baby? Why are celebs upset about being branded one?

Nepo baby has become a term of derision, referring to a person who has benefitted from nepotism

The New Yorker used the term to refer to names including Maya Hawke, the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hakwe; Dakota Johnson, the daughter of Miami Vice’s Don Johnson and actress Melanie Griffiths, and Lily-Rose Depp, offspring of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.

Some stars including Lily Allen -the daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen – and Lottie Moss – the half-sister of Kate Moss – have spoken out against the article.

The ‘businesswoman’ daughter of now-retired PR queen Roxy Jacenko and her investment banker husband Oliver Curtis has benefited handsomely from her mother’s business acumen and media profile.

She was an influencer before she could walk and is already on track to retire at 15 thanks to her children’s fashion accessory brand Pixie’s Bows and toy range Pixie’s Fidgets.

PR queen Roxy travelled to the Los Angeles last year to meet with producers to put the youngster in front of the camera for her own TV show.

Pixie’s business-savvy mother helped her establish her brands, and the pre-teen now estimates that she’ll earn $21million over the next decade.

‘You won’t need to worry; you can retire at 15 the way you’re going,’ Roxy said to her daughter in a joint interview in Stellar magazine in December.

The Ministry of Talent founder went on to say that Pixie is a natural businesswoman.

‘You know, what is the most exciting for me is the entrepreneurial spirit that she has at such a young age,’ she told the magazine.

‘I never had it, although it was drummed into me that I had to succeed. When I was 14, I got a job at McDonald’s because that’s what you did back in my day.’

‘So, I guess to me the biggest thing is her drive as an entrepreneur. Yes, I’ve enabled it, but she’s still got it, which is for me the most rewarding part.’

In May, Pixie’s line of toys alone sold a mammoth $200,000 worth in their debut month across Australia.
