Antoine Griezmann does his best John Terry impression as he skies penalty against Sevilla after slipping… but Atletico Madrid still reach Copa del Rey semi-finals after late Memphis Depay winner

Antoine Griezmann attracted comparisons with John Terry after he comically slipped and skied a penalty against Sevilla on Thursday night.

The Atletico Madrid striker sent the ball ballooning into the crowd and failed to give his side the lead 26 minutes into their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

His mishap was similar to Terry’s tumble in the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United, when he hit the post from the spot in a shoot-out Chelsea went on to lose.

Fate was more forgiving towards Griezmann as Memphis Depay scored a late winner to spare him his blushes and send Atletico into the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

The Frenchman has a questionable record from 12 yards, converting 23 penalties and missing 12 over the course of his career. He once even missed five penalties on the trot.

Fans were quick to point out the Terry comparison after his latest error.

‘John Terry called, he wants his penalty back,’ joked one user on X, formerly Twitter.

‘John Terry!’ said another.

‘They tell you that he is the best player in the world,’ wrote one.

‘We have officially seen it all,’ announced another.

‘Wow another year of Griezmann bottling the Euros,’ said one.

That final comment referee to France losing the 2016 European Championship final against Portugal, when Eder wasthe unlikely scorer in a 1-0 from Fernando Santos’ side.

Griezmann is having a strong season, having scored 18 goals in 30 games, and Atletico are still in the running for three trophies.

Earlier in the month, he scored a 100th-minute goal as Atletico beat bitter rivals Real Madrid 4-2 in a Copa del Rey round of 16 thriller.

Diego Simeone’s side are fourth in LaLiga and likely out of the title race, but stand every chance in the Copa del Rey with Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, and Mallorca the other sides left.

In the Champions League last 16, they will face Inter Milan, who reached the final last season and lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
