Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that his country will engage in peace talks with the United States next week, signaling a crucial diplomatic effort amid shifting US policies under President Donald Trump.
The talks, set to take place in Saudi Arabia, follow a tense meeting between the two leaders at the White House last week that resulted in the suspension of US military support and intelligence sharing with Kyiv.
Diplomatic Efforts Amid Policy Shifts
In his nightly address, Zelensky confirmed his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia on Monday, where he will meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. His team will remain in the region to conduct further discussions with US officials in an attempt to secure a “fast” and “lasting” peace agreement.
Trump’s return to the White House has led to a dramatic shift in US-Ukraine relations.
His administration has taken a step back from military assistance, cutting off intelligence sharing and pausing military aid to Ukraine. Trump has emphasized that Ukraine must actively pursue peace negotiations with Russia, putting significant pressure on Zelensky’s government.
Fallout from White House Confrontation
The upcoming negotiations come after a heated confrontation between Zelensky and Trump during their Oval Office meeting last Friday. The fallout from this meeting has raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to sustain its military campaign against Russian forces without continued US support.
Trump’s National Security Adviser, Mike Waltz, confirmed the shift in policy, stating, “We have taken a step back.” In response, European leaders have begun emergency discussions on increasing their defense budgets to compensate for reduced American support.
The European Commission has proposed freeing up approximately €650 billion ($702 billion) for defense spending, with an additional €150 billion ($162 billion) in loans for military equipment.
Zelensky Calls for Immediate Truce
Despite the diplomatic tensions, Zelensky remains determined to mend relations and move toward a resolution. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he acknowledged the rocky meeting with Trump, calling it “regrettable,” but emphasized the need to “make things right.”
Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to negotiating an immediate truce in air and sea combat zones, provided that Russia reciprocates. He outlined key steps for achieving peace, including the release of prisoners, the cessation of missile and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure, and broader negotiations for a final settlement.
Balancing Diplomacy and Defense
Ukraine’s diplomatic approach reflects both urgency and pragmatism.
With the US reassessing its role, Kyiv is seeking alternative means of securing its sovereignty while keeping the door open for negotiations. European nations are now under increased pressure to step up military and financial assistance.
Zelensky also acknowledged Trump’s past support, recalling the moment when the former president first provided Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” he stated.
As Ukraine prepares for crucial discussions in Saudi Arabia, the world will be watching to see if a path to peace can be found or if the war will continue without the backing of one of its strongest allies.
